Pura Agua (Pure Water) by Florida native Captain Rodney Smith is entertaining and educational, featuring water stories told from his viewpoint as a fishing guide, naturalist, and environmentalist.

Smith weaves his tales around a common thread: the water crisis and the dire straits we are experiencing throughout the world, and particularly in Florida. Because it will take a global village to combat both the current and future global water crises, Smith's goal in writing Pura Agua was to begin the conversation differently: to educate while entertaining readers, and then to have them share the book with a family member.

About the Author

Outdoor photojournalist and author Rodney Smith is a Florida native who writes and captures images to educate and inspire. While his subjects touch on a plethora of topics, Smith’s focus is mainly trained on outdoor-centric issues including — but not limited to — adventure, body surfing, hiking, sport fishing, paddling, camping, and beach-combing. His energetic efforts address current issues affecting our collective quality of life.

An ardent observer of Earth’s climate change and the decline of our planet’s biodiversity, including the steady decline of his backyard waterway, the Indian River Lagoon, Smith works tirelessly on conservation issues as both an advocate and educator. He and his wife, Karen, are the innovators behind the highly successful Hook Kids on Fishing program, which has taught thousands of children and their families the value of a healthy environment and the benefits of outdoor experience. They were also the motivators for Anglers for Conservation, a non-profit group of environmentally concerned citizens who promote stewardship of our waters. Also, the Smiths have launched a new program which they are thrilled about: Kids Dig Gardening. Rodney is the volunteer coordinator, and Karen’s volunteer work is organizing the Kids Dig Gardening program.

Through his many appearances and speaking engagements Smith has displayed a unique and in-depth understanding of the economic and environmental impacts of Florida’s poor politics and rapid population growth. A longtime fishing captain and co-founder of Coastal Angler Magazine, Smith is spiritually connected to the history, progression, and evolution of Florida’s culture and its people.

In addition to his three fictional books in “The Cheyenne Series,” The Road to Matapalo, Weed Queen, and Pura Vida, Smith is the author of two instructional books, Catching Made Easy and Enjoying Life on the Indian River Lagoon Coast.
